Someday in the future dyes in electric motors might indicate when cable insulation is becoming fragile and the motor needs to be replaced. A new process has been developed enabling the dyes to be directly integrated into the insulation. By changing color, it will show how much the insulating resin layer around the copper wires in the motor has degraded.

The chosen dyes glows orange under UV light, but when meeting alcohol it shifts to light green. The different color spectra could be analysed by the special devices installed in the engine. In this way, people can see if a replacement is necessary, without opening up the engine. Hopefully it could avoid unnecessary motor replacements in the future.
